To obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A, there are several requirements that you need to fulfill. Here is a general overview of the prerequisites:

  1. Age Requirement: You must be at least 18 years old to obtain a CDL Class A license. However, please note that if you plan to drive across state lines or transport hazardous materials, you must be at least 21 years old.

  2. Driver’s License: You should hold a valid non-commercial driver’s license issued by the State of Michigan. This serves as the foundation for obtaining a CDL.

  3. Medical Certification: You need to undergo a medical examination conducted by a certified medical professional. The examination ensures that you are physically qualified to operate a commercial vehicle. The results of the examination are documented on a Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC).

  4. Knowledge Tests: You are required to pass written knowledge tests specific to the CDL Class A license. These tests evaluate your understanding of general commercial driving regulations, vehicle operation, safety procedures, and more. The specific tests may vary by state.

  5. Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP): Before getting your CDL Class A, you will typically need to obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). The CLP allows you to practice driving a commercial vehicle under the supervision of a licensed CDL holder. To obtain a CLP, you’ll need to pass additional written tests related to general knowledge and specific endorsements, such as air brakes and combination vehicles.

  6. Training Program: These programs provide comprehensive classroom instruction and hands-on training to help you develop the necessary skills for commercial driving. Training programs are required to meet the Entry Level Drivers Training (ELDT).

  7. Skills Test: The final step is the CDL skills test, which consists of a pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and an on-road driving test. You must demonstrate your ability to perform various maneuvers and handle the commercial vehicle safely. The skills test is administered by a state-approved examiner.

Obtaining a CDL Class A can open up opportunities for a variety of commercial driving careers, including driving tractor-trailers, tanker trucks, and combination vehicles. It’s a rewarding and challenging profession that requires responsible and skilled drivers.

To obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B, you need to fulfill certain requirements. Here are the general prerequisites:

  1. Age Requirement: You must be at least 18 years old to obtain a CDL Class B license. However, please note that if you plan to drive across state lines or transport hazardous materials, you must be at least 21 years old.
  2. Driver’s License: You should hold a valid non-commercial driver’s license issued by the State of Michigan. This serves as the foundation for obtaining a CDL.
  3. Medical Certification: Similar to CDL Class A, you need to undergo a medical examination conducted by a certified medical professional. The examination ensures that you are physically qualified to operate a commercial vehicle. The results of the examination are documented on a Medical Examiner’s Certificate (MEC).
  4. Knowledge Tests: You are required to pass written knowledge tests specific to the CDL Class B license. These tests evaluate your understanding of general commercial driving regulations, vehicle operation, safety procedures, and more. The specific tests may vary by state.
  5. Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP): Before getting your CDL Class B, you will typically need to obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP). The CLP allows you to practice driving a commercial vehicle under the supervision of a licensed CDL holder. To obtain a CLP, you’ll need to pass additional written tests related to general knowledge and specific endorsements, such as air brakes and passenger vehicles if applicable. You must hold this for 14 days before you are eligible for taking the State of Michigan Driving Test
  6. Training Program: These programs provide comprehensive classroom instruction and hands-on training to help you develop the necessary skills for commercial driving. Training programs are required to meet the Entry Level Drivers Training (ELDT).
  7. Skills Test: The final step is the CDL skills test, which includes a pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and an on-road driving test. You must demonstrate your ability to perform various maneuvers and handle the commercial vehicle safely. The skills test is administered by a state-approved examiner.

Obtaining a CDL Class B can qualify you for driving straight trucks, buses, delivery trucks, and other vehicles that do not require a trailer or have a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) under a certain threshold. It’s important to learn and practice the necessary skills to become a safe and responsible commercial driver.
